Increasing vocabulary by mobile phones: theoretical perspectives

Now published article (http://riviste.unimi.it/index.php/promoitals/article/view/1920) on SIMOLA describing learning mediated by portable technology in the broader context of the relationship between digital technologies and didactics. The article starts a reflection on mobile learning singling out its specificity and how it can be integrated with traditional learning, and discuss critically methodological aspects of the project. The article offers a survey of studies on mobile learning and concludes observing how digital technologies can be used in connection to didactic activities (a “social” use of digital media), as well as in a more targeted way so that the technologies are the main tools for specific didactic objectives. The SIMOLA aims at building L2 lexis thanks to a specific software designed to allow for the creation and the sharing of content by learners following a bottom-up approach. The strong point of the project consists in the fact that informal learning takes place in every-day situations, in a collaborative way and is learning by doing. An ulterior phase of the project should show whether the participants reached a higher level in their lexical development with respect to the control class.
